The COP9 signalosome (CSN) is a large protein complex that functions in the ubiquitin–proteasome intracellular protein degradation pathway. It is believed to be part of the regulatory machinery in all animals, plants and fungi.
My task was to illustrate the crystal structure of the entire eight-subunit COP9 signalosome, which Nicolas Thomä and co-workers solved at 3.8 Å resolution.
We decided on a combination of cartoon representation of the protein backbone and a transparent surface representation as a backdrop.
