Brec1-recombinase is an experimental enzyme that in lab tests has successfully removed proviral DNA from HIV-infected cells. It was created by researchers at the Heinrich Pette Institute – Leibniz Institute for Experimental Virology and the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics and was derived from Cre-recombinase through selective mutation.
The animation above illustrates the basic mechanism of Brec1-recombinase.
