During the pandemic, I had the unique opportunity to discuss my work as a scientific illustrator with Deutsche Welle, focusing on my depictions of viruses.
It was just a short clip and they cut much of the material, so what’s left feels a little incoherent and incomplete. Still, it was a nice chance to share how visuals can bring scientific data about the virus to life. In the screenshot below I explain how some artistic choices of the virus depiction, such as colors, are purely artistic and may vary from one illustrator to another.
Andrea Thorn from the Corona Structural Task Force for whom I did some of these illustrations, did a much better job explaining how the research data is used to create a better understanding of the virus structure.
